Update : 19 Dec 2015, 07:59 PM

Noted speakers at a discussion yesterday expressed concerns at the state of insecurity and human rights abuses in various parts of the world.

Former caretaker government adviser Mainul Hosein, former ambassadors, scholars, policy analysts and human rights activists spoke at the seminar titled “Security and Human Rights: Why is the UN Helpless?” at a city hotel.

Centre for Governance Studies, Dhaka organised the event. It was chaired by Ataur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Political Science Association, while the Guest of Honor was Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, former adviser to a caretaker government.

Presenting the keynote paper, former ambassador Rashed Ahmed talked about the asymmetry of the current world order which is dominated by the United States and Russia in the security arenas.

He said they had fail to protect the credibility of the United Nations as members of the UN Security Council for their own interests.

Dr Iftekhar spoke on the self-motivations of the P5 (permanent members) of the UN that overlooks the interests of the 193 member states.
