Mother of a councillor candidate in Gafargaon Municipal polls has allegedly been killed by the supporters of another contestant.
The deceased was identified as Rabeya Khatun, 55, mother of Azizul Islam, a councillor candidate of Ward No 3 and also the ward Awami League general secretary.
Gafargaon police station OC (investigation) Md Habibur Rahman confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about the death. He, however, did not confirm the reasons of the death.
Quoting Azizul, the OC said a group of armed cadres led by Ward No 3 councillor candidate and also ward Awami League President Anisur Rahman attacked the house of Azizul Islam on Wednesday night.
Azizul and his two brothers were also injured in the attack. Police, meanwhile, held Anisur’s two nephews Iqbal and Sohag in this connection, the OC said.
However, Anisur said: "I heard that some people attacked Azizul's house. But I do not have any link with the incident."
