Road accidents kill 24 in 6 districts

At least 24 people were killed and 58 others injured in road accidents in the capital, and Sirajganj, Rajshahi, Jessore, Rangpur and Bagerhat districts yesterday.

Of them, nine lost their lives in a single road crash in Sirajganj while seven more in Rajshahi.

In Sirajganj, nine people, including five women and a child, were killed and nine others injured in a collision between an oil tanker and a three-wheeler at Garadah on Bogra-Nagarbari highway in Shahzadpur around 6:15am.

All the deceased hailed from Boro Maharajpur village in the upazila. They were going to Gazipur on the three-wheeler to join a family programme there. Five of them died on the spot while four others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.

Driver and helper of the tanker fled the scene, police said adding that vehicular movement had remained suspended for around three hours due to the collision.

Meanwhile, an unidentified schoolgirl was killed and four others were injured in a collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the same area around noon.

In Rajshahi, at least seven people, including a couple, were killed and 40 others injured in as two buses collided head-on in Maskata Dighi area under Motihar of the city around 1:30pm. Both the drivers – of National Travels and Arpa Paribahan – also died on the spot.

The buses collided head-on and then hit two human haulers, leaving seven people killed on the spot and others injured.

In Rangpur, two motorcyclists were killed as a goods-laden trolley hit their bike in Modern Crossing area of the city in the afternoon. The deceased are Polash and Siam.

In the capital, a youth was killed as a vehicle ran him over in front of Molla Tower, opposite to Bangladesh Television Bhaban, in Rampura area in the morning. The deceased is Ujjal, 20.

In Jessore, three people were killed and seven others injured as a Jessore-bound bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Jessore-Benapole highway in Malonchi area of sadar upazila around 11am.

The deceased are Ohed Ali, Ayub Hossain of Teroghoria village, and Ali Hossain, 18, of Durgapur village in sadar upazila.

Shikder Akkas Ali, OC of Kotwali model police station, said the injured were admitted to Jessore 250-bedded Hospital where three of them succumbed to their injuries.

In Bagerhat, a man was killed and five others injured as a passenger bus overturned on Khulna-Mongla highway in Babur Bari area of Rampal upazila in the morning.

The deceased is Rezaul Khan, 45, son of Chanda Khan, hailing from Dakhsin Khanpur village of sadar upazila.
