Facebook unblocked

Update : 10 Dec 2015, 08:06 AM

Popular social networking site Facebook has been unblocked in Bangladesh after 22 days.

Facebook is accessible from the app since 2pm Thursday. Users are also able to access Facebook from the website around 2:15pm.

"We have unblocked Facebook around 2pm," BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood told the Dhaka Tribune.

Masud Kabir, managing director of International Internet Gateway Operator Mango, said: "We received the government instruction to unblock Facebook around 2pm and we unblocked it as soon we got the order."

Earlier around 1:30pm, State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said the government instructed BTRC to unblock Facebook.

"We are unblocking Facebook for the sake of people," Tarana said in a press briefing at the secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

She, however, said other social networking apps will remain blocked for security reasons.

The temporary ban on the social networking platform came shortly after the Supreme Court rejected review petitions by war criminals SQ Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid on November 18.

Citing security reasons, the government also blocked social networking platforms Whatsapp and Viber.

In Bangladesh, over 15 million people are active Facebook users and the number is rising.
