8 suspected robbers lynched in Narayanganj

Eight suspected robbers have been beaten to death by angry mob at Purinda Bazar under Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj district.

Of the deceased, four were identified as Shawkat, 30, of Modhopara village in Mymensingh, Rubel 28, of the same village, Jewel alias Tutu, 32, and Rony of Feni.

Araihazar police station Inspector (Investigation) Arifur Rahman said: “A gang of robbers broke into the rice shop of one Gofur Mia at Purinda Bazar around 4am Thursday.

“An announcement was made regarding the robbery using the local mosque's loudspeakers.”

Following the announcement, the villagers gathered and caught the robbers and beat them up severely.

The inspector said: “Four of them died on the spot in the mob beating while three others died on their way to the upazila health complex. We recovered the bodies of the four robbers from a pond near the market in the morning.”

Meanwhile, five other suspected robbers were critically injured in the mob beating.

He said the injured have been admitted to the health complex, where one of them died around 12:30pm.

Later, three of the injured -- Sojib, 25, Manik, 28, and Sabbir, 26 -- were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while another man was kept at Araihazar police station.

Araihazar police station ASI Kabir Uddin said: "We have brought them here for treatment. If doctors suggest keeping them admitted then we well left them here under police custody. Otherwise, they will be taken to Narayanganj tonight."
