Trump cries for top spot in Time's Person of the Year

Update : 09 Dec 2015, 04:40 PM

US Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump Donald Trump cries fall as German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named TIME’s Person of the Year.

Trump had predicted that there was "no way" the magazine's editors would pick him as their Person of the Year, suggesting they could not bring themselves to name him the winner, Sun Times Network reports.

More specifically, he is not pleased that he was not selected and took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to offer up “I told you so.”

“I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite,” he wrote. “They picked person who is ruining Germany.”

TIME, obviously disagreed with his assessment that Merkel is “ruining Germany.”

The magazine gave her the nod for opening her borders to refugees while also being an “indispensable player” in helping navigate the debt crisis in Europe.

“By viewing the refugees as victims to be rescued rather than invaders to be repelled, the woman raised behind the Iron Curtain gambled on freedom. The pastor’s daughter wielded mercy like a weapon,” Trump blasted.

TIME editor Nancy Gibbs said in an essay announcing the annual selection. “You can agree with her or not, but she is not taking the easy road. Leaders are tested only when people don’t want to follow.”

Gibbs said Merkel won in 2015 because "in a year where world leaders were tested all through the year, no one was tested like she was."

Trump made the magazine’s shortlist announced earlier in the week, along with Black Lives Matter activists, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and Caitlyn Jenner.

In the online voting that TIME opened up to readers, Bernie Sanders finished first at 10.2 percent while Merkel finished in 10th place at 2.4 percent. Trump finished behind Merkel with 1.8 percent, tying with tennis star Serena Williams.
