Update : 09 Dec 2015, 05:55 AM

Robbers have reportedly crushed two vegetables traders to death with their vehicle in Bhakurta area in Savar.

The deceased are Mohsin, 37, and his nephew Masud, 22. Both the traders hailed from Battali area of Keraniganj.

Witnesses said four people, including Mohsin and Masud, were heading toward the capital with the vegetables in a pickup van early Wednesday when a gang of robbers intercepted them on Dhaka-Aricha highway as their vehicle reached near Turag bridge.

The robbers hit the four people indiscriminately with lethal weapons and took away their cash and belongings.

The robbers knocked Mohsin and Masud down while fleeing the spot. Mohsin and Masud died on the spot.

The locals took the injured --Alam and Masud-- to a local hospital in a critical condition.

Savar model police station Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rasel Sheikh said the robbers hacked the four and looted their cash and other valuables.

He said Mohsin and Masud died when the robbers knocked them down while fleeing the spot.

However, Savar model police station OC SM Kamruzzaman had earlier denied the robbery.

Meanwhile, angry locals put up a barricade on the highway around 9:30am. Later, additional police went to the spot and removed the protesting locals from the highway after half an hour.

Bhakurta UP ward no 6 member Shahabuddin Mollah said: “Such sorts of robbery are prevalent on the highway in the area and local police are yet to take any fruitful measures to check the crimes despite our repeated appeals.”
