Minister: Discussion with Facebook fruitful

Update : 06 Dec 2015, 07:23 PM

The government has had a fruitful discussion with Facebook representatives and the ban on the use of the world’s most popular social media platform might be lifted soon, the home minister has said.

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal made the statement at the Secretariat yesterday after a meeting with two visiting regional representatives of Facebook.

“We had a fruitful discussion on issues related to national security, propaganda and violence against women that had been going on in popular social networking sites in Bangladesh,” he told reporters.

“... Now we will review the outcomes of today’s [Sunday’s] discussion and lift the ban on social networking sites soon,” he said.

The minister, however, did not say anything for certain when asked exactly when the ban might be lifted. He said they would do it after the law enforcement agencies give the clearance.

The representatives who took part in yesterday’s meeting are Deepali Liberhan, public policy manager for Facebook South Asia, and Capt Vikram Langeh, law enforcement specialist of Facebook South Asia.

Alongside the home minister, State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim, State Minister for ICT Junaid Ahmed Palak, police chief AKM Shahidul Huq and representatives from several intelligence agencies took part in the two-hour meeting.

The meeting was a result of the government’s expression of interest in discussing the various misuses of Facebook in Bangladesh.
