Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq has been freed from confinement after three hours.

Agitating transport workers besieged the mayor inside the Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Union office when Annisul went at Tejgaon truck stand to talk over eviction drive with truck owners.

Coming out from the union office with police escort, Annisul addressed the agitating transport workers over the situation.

He said: “A well-managed truck terminal will be constructed here very soon.”

A chaotic situation erupted as the Dhaka North City Corporation authorities started eviction drive in the bus stand area.

A team led by Annisul Huq along with police and RAB officials reached the truck stand area on Sunday afternoon and some unruly people tried to prevent the move.

Later, it was seen the protesting grabbers ignited tyres on the road to thwart the eviction drive.

The transport workers were also seen throwing bricks towards the newsmen covering the situation. Additional law enforcers were deployed in the area to calm the situation.

Annisul Huq told media: “I have been running the Tejgaon bus stand eviction drive in consultation with railways minister and local transport leaders for the sake of the city dwellers. I will not retreat from the drive in the face of protest from some grabbers.”

Agitating transport workers claimed that one of their fellows was injured with bullet.

However, Annisul Huq said: "I have heard that one person was injured. But I have no idea whether it is a rumour." He said some people were hurling bricks and some were instigating it.
