The ban on Facebook and other online messaging and calling services will be lifted once the government gets green signal from law-enforcing agencies, said State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak.

The junior minister said: “The government has blocked popular social media platform Facebook and online messaging and calling services WhatsApp and Viber on security grounds.

“But, it is just a temporary measure. The ban will be lifted soon after the green signal from the law enforcing agencies.”

Palak made the statement while inaugurating the free Wifi service of Robi Axiata Limited at Sylhet Government Murari Chand College (MC College) ground on Saturday.

“As the number of social media users is increasing day by day, the risk is also increasing. So, the government is mulling over formulating Digital Security Law in order to control risks while using social networking platforms,” said the state minister.

Earlier on November 18, the government blocked Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber soon after the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty to war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, who were executed on November 22.

On November 23, State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said there is no relevance between the blocking of virtual social network Facebook and the execution of two war criminals.

She said: “We blocked Facebook and online messaging services after getting directives from the Home Ministry on public security issues.”

“After public safety and security is ensured, the restriction on Facebook will be lifted,” the state minister added.
