A Bangladeshi national was killed by the Indian Border Security Forces yesterday near the Hatibandha border in Lalmonirhat.
The deceased is Amulya Chandra Barman, 38, son of Mohesh Chandra Barman of Daikhawa village. He was reportedly shot dead by the BSF near border as he attempted to breach the border fence for smuggling cattle from India.
Locals and BGB sources said Amulya was killed on the spot after a Boromoricha camp BSF team from Cooch Behar’s 21 BSF Battalion opened fire when a group of six-seven cattle smugglers tried to cross the barbed wire fence.
Lt Col Bazlur Rahman Hayati, commander of Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion, confirmed the incident. The BGB has lodged a strong protest with the BSF and called a flag meeting on the issue, he added.
