Jamaat man held for threatening intellectuals with death

The members of Detective Branch of Police have arrested an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami for allegedly threatening noted intellectuals of the country with death.

The arrestee is Abdul Haque, of Sunamganj. He is a madrasa teacher in Sylhet.

Muntasirul Islam, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Dhaka Tribune: “DB members arrested Abdul Haque from the capital's Tejgaon area on Tuesday midnight.”

In a press briefing, Detective Branch Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said: “So far we have found evidence of Abdul's group giving death threats to some 153 eminent citizens, including Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Muntasir Mamun, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee leader Shahriar Kabir and Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.

“Abdul himself made threats to many people spoofing the mobile phone number of three people. He spoofed those people's phone numbers to get them in trouble over the feud of previous rivalry.”
