Update : 24 Nov 2015, 09:48 AM

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has announced the schedule of the countrywide municipal elections.

He declared the election schedule in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

As per the declaration, the polls will be held in the country's 234 municipalities on December 30.

The CEC said the candidates nominated by political parties registered with the Election Commission or independent aspirants would have to submit their nomination papers by December 3.

He also said the deadline for the nomination cancellation is December 13.

First of its kind, the country is going to see political party-backed municipality race across the country, but the race of the councillors will be non-partisan manner.

Rakibuddin Ahmad also said the persons receiving government privileges, including ministers, state ministers and lawmakers, will not participate in campaigns for the local government elections and a political party can nominate only one mayoral candidate.

If any political party nominates several candidates, the commission will cancel the candidacy of all candidates, he added.

Political parties will be able to spend a maximum of Tk1 lakh in each municipality and independent mayoral candidates will have to collect signatures of 100 voters in their respective municipalities and submit the signatures along with nomination papers.

On November 19, the parliament passed the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Bill 2015, paving the way for arranging elections only for the mayoral posts in the municipalities on a partisan basis.
