Tower Hamlets ex-mayor Lutfur declared bankrupt

Update : 23 Nov 2015, 05:05 PM

The former mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, has been declared bankrupt seven months after being found guilty of electoral fraud.

A document from The Individual Insolvency Service, dated November 18, has confirmed the news.

The news came ahead of the former mayor of Tower Hamlets scheduled appearance at the High Court on December 1, in a battle over payment of legal costs.

Rahman was stripped of office in April by an electoral court investigating the 2014 poll that saw him returned to power for a second term.

He protested his innocence throughout the High Court case, which was brought by four petitioners who all live in Tower Hamlets, and was ordered to pay their legal costs – around £500,000.

When someone is declared bankrupt all the debts they owe are wiped, but the move can have a long-term effect on their credit rating.
