President Abdul Hamid has turned down the mercy petitions filed by death-row war crimes convicts Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
Sources close to law ministry told Dhaka Tribune around 9:30pm on Saturday.
BNP leader Salauddin and Jamaat leader Mujahid sought presidential clemency.
Law Minister Anisul Huq told the reporters: “The death row convicts have filed mercy petitions.”
Wishing anonymity, a high official of Home Ministry said Deputy Jailer Md Arif Hossain of Dhaka Central Jail handed the copies of the mercy petitions to Smriti Rani Gharami, additional secretary for home, around 3pm Saturday.
