Update : 21 Nov 2015, 08:54 AM

Death row war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid have sought presidential clemency.

Law Minister Anisul Huq told the reporters: “The death row convicts have filed mercy petitions.”

Wishing anonymity, a high official of Home Ministry said Deputy Jailer Md Arif Hossain of Dhaka Central Jail handed the copies of the mercy petitions to Smriti Rani Gharami, additional secretary for home, around 3pm Saturday.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the Dhaka Tribune that the president will take the decision on the mercy petitions and we hope the decision will come soon.

Salauddin’s lawyers went to the jail gate around 4pm tried to get permission to see him. They left the place as on-duty officials denied their appeal.

Salauddin's lawyer Hujjatul Islam Khan Alfesani told the Dhaka Tribune: “We waited at the jail gate around 4pm to get the permission to visit our client. But, the on-duty officials said that according to law there is no permission to meet with death row convicts as they already filed mercy petitions.”
