IGP: Anisuzzaman’s threatener identified

Update : 16 Nov 2015, 06:55 PM

The man who made a death threat against Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University has been identified, the country’s chief of police said yesterday.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque made the announcement while speaking at a programme at Police Headquarters in Dhaka to give financial assistance to the families of 14 deceased policemen who died in separate incidents.

The IGP said the man who owns the phone number is innocent and added that the threat was made in a text message using a cloned SIM card. “We have identified the culprit,” he said. “He subscribes to a fundamentalist ideology.”

Police have intensified efforts to arrest the suspect who threatened the former professor of Bangla and noted secularist writer, the IGP said.

The text message was sent around 4:30pm on November 10. The eminent academic filed a case with Gulshan police station the same night around 9pm.

After filing the diary, he told reporters the text message was written in flawless English.

The message criticised Anisuzzaman for supporting the bloggers and asked whether he too wanted to get killed.
