Sheikh Selim: Doctors lack professionalism

Update : 13 Nov 2015, 07:20 PM

Former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim has come under fire from doctors after saying the medical practitioners in the country lacked professionalism.

The Awami League leader, who is also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health Ministry, said the state has to bear around Tk20 lakh for every medical student; but after finishing their academic studies, those doctors do not show professionalism with their patients.

“There are many good doctors in our country. But they lack the professional attitude that is important for a doctor. The doctors in our country do not show proper attitude with patients, which is why patients prefer to go abroad for better treatment,” he told a conference of pro-AL doctors association Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad.

“I had seen such non-professionalism in most doctors, so I also admire foreign hospitals,” Sheikh Selim told the programme at Suhrawardy Udyan.

However, his remarks were met with strong shouts of protest from the doctors present there.

As a result, the Awami League leader had to cut his speech short.
