The government is planning to stop the usage of Viber and WhatsApp messengers temporally in the country to track down cyber criminals.
“We have a plan to halt access to Viber and WhatsApp for some days to trace the cyber crime bigwigs. The action may appear any time on need,” said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The PM said this in reply to a question from independent lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday.
On September 17, 2012, telecom watchdog BRTC blocked YouTube temporarily to prevent people from watching a 14-minute trailer of a film titled “Innocence of Muslims,” which mocked Islam and Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh).
