Modi phones PM, extends Deepavali greetings

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and greeted her and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of Hindu religious festival Deepavali (Diwali).

"Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday morning and greeted her and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of Deepavali," said PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also greeted Narendra Modi and the people of India on the occasion.

Deepavali or the "festival of lights" is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) every year.

It is one of the largest and brightest festivals in India.

The Hindus in Bangladesh also celebrate the festival in befitting manner.
