The design of the much-awaited Rapid Bus Transit (RBT) project is complete and its tender will be floated soon.
“We hope to float the tender within two weeks,” Project Director Afil Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
The project will install dedicated lanes for public buses in the capital’s roads for improved connectivity along the Dhaka-Gazipur route.
Its implementation was originally supposed to begin in 2012, but was delayed several times for various reasons, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
“We faced many problems with the project, but we have overcome them. The tender for the project will be floated soon and the work will begin by December,” the minister told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
He said the project will hopefully be complete in two years.
The project is expected to cost about Tk2,040 crore. The Asian Development Bank, French Agency for Development and Global Environment Facility will fund Tk1,650.7 crore, and the rest will be funded by the government.
The project consists of 20km BRT corridor, six flyovers, four kilometres of elevated roads, 141 connecting roads, 12km of storm drains, eight-lane Tongi bridge, Gazipur bus depot, and Joydebpur and Airport bus terminals.
The six flyovers will be constructed at the airport crossing, Jasimuddin Road in Uttara, Konia, Boardbazar, Vogra, and Joydebpur in Gazipur.
