A young girl in Gazipur's Kaliakair sustained serious burn injuries after her husband tried to burn her to death over family rows on Saturday night.
Twenty-two-year-old Poly Rani Gupta alias Tapashi Das was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital hours after the attack.
Partha Shankar Paul, resident surgeon of the hospital's burn unit, said the victim had sustained 90% burns and was in a critical condition.
Tapashi is the daughter of Paresh Chandra Gupta of Elanguri villager under Kishoreganj's Itna upazila.
Police said Tapashi was in love with Sanjay Kumar Das, 26, and tied the knot with him five to six years ago.
Sanjay, who works at a ready-made garment factory in Chandra Palli Bidyut area, went on run after attacking his wife.
The couple lives in a rented flat in Dighirpar area of Purba Chandara in Kaliakair upazila where Tapashi was attacked.
On Saturday night, Sanjay poured kerosene on his wife's body before setting her on fire.
Tapashi screamed in pain and ran out of the front door where other renters of the house threw water at her and put out the fire.
They took her to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex but doctors advised to send her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Abdul Motaleb, officer-in-charge of Kaliakair police station, said a probe had been launched and police were trying to nab Sanjay.
