Police: Two suspected attackers identified

Update : 05 Nov 2015, 07:42 PM

Police have claimed that they have been able to identify two suspects who hurled hand-made grenades at a crowd that gathered to bring out a Tazia procession from Hussaini Dalan premises on October 24.

A source in the investigation team yesterday said they were waiting for the opportune moment to arrest the duo.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muntasirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that there had been significant progress in the case.

He, however, said they needed some more time to present the visible progress. “No one has been detained so far.”

The investigators said they were sure that at least four people were involved in the attacks. Two carried the grenades while the other two hurled those.

It was a premeditated attack and the attackers wanted to inflict maximum damage on the gathering, he said.

“In a bid to do that the first bomb was hurled at the entry point of Hussaini Dalan and the second one at the heart of the crowd.”

After the second bomb exploded the crowd ran for cover towards the graveyard where the third bomb was blasted.

Deputy Commissioner (DB police) Mashruqur Rahman Khaled told the Dhaka Tribune that they were looking for those two persons who had joined the congregation sporting black jeans and white kurtas to easily mingle with the Shia Muslims.

The graveyard had no CCTV cameras. Only the north-east and north-west parts were under the coverage of CCTVs.

After hurling the bombs the perpetrators fled the scene by jumping over the low boundary wall on the south-west corner of the graveyard and escaped through the rear gate of the premises, said Mashruq.

The investigators repeatedly said they would also look into the security measures taken during the attacks to see if there was any negligence on part of any quarters.

On October 24, three hand-made grenades were hurled when hundreds of Shia Muslims were preparing for their traditional Tazia procession around 1:45am.

A boy named Sazzadul Haque Sanju was killed on the spot in the attack.

According to police, some 104 people were injured in the attack. Of them, 16 were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where one died later on October 29.

The Detective Branch of police is investigating the incident.
