The High Court has ordered the authorities of Khulna City Corporation to give back Jessore Road its old name which is now named after Muslim League leader Khan A Sabur.
The High Court bench comprising justices – Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman – gave the order yesterday after their attention was drawn to a newspaper report.
The court ordered the city corporation to change the name within a week. On August 25, the court also ordered the city authorities to change the name of A Sabur Road as Jessore Road, as it was previously without any delay.
The court also asked the Khulna City Corporation mayor to submit a report on actions which it takes on the issue within seven days.
Khan A Sabur, a minister during Ayub Khan’s regime, was a collaborator of the Pakistani Army during Liberation War in 1971.
The bench also asked Islamic University authorities to inform the court whether it has carried out court’s previous order or not regarding the renaming of Shah Azizur Rahman auditorium.
On August 25, the High Court directed the authorities of the university to rename the name of the auditorium which has been named after Shah Azizur Rahman who also had collaborated with the Pakistani forces in 1971 and later became prime minister during Ziaur Rahman’s regime.
