Minister: Malaysia to open all sectors for Bangladeshis

Update : 03 Nov 2015, 11:07 AM

Malaysia will reopen all its sectors, including the job market, for Bangladeshi workers in a short time, said Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam.

Newly appointed overseas employment minister Tuesday made the disclosure while talking to reporters after holding a meeting with the visiting Malaysian government delegation.

He said: “We have held a successful meeting with the five-member Malaysian delegation led by the country's Human Resources Ministry's Secretary General Saripuddin Bin Hj Kasim and they agreed to open more sectors for Bangladeshi migrants through a new manpower recruitment scheme called G2G Plus.”

The G2G Plus scheme is much like the G2G system but additionally offers the inclusion of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (Baira) in the hiring process which was absent in the G2G scheme, added the minister.

“Malaysia hopefully will begin hiring a huge number of workers from Bangladesh within a short period through the government as well as private recruiting agencies. The migration cost will be low under the G2G Plus scheme,” Nurul told reporters after a meeting with the visiting Malaysian delegation.

On November 2, the delegation arrived in Dhaka to finalise recruitment modalities for Bangladeshi workers.

Currently, the country only took in workers for the plantation sector under the G2G process that was initiated in 2012. Between 2009 and 2012 Malaysia did not import Bangladeshi labourers.

But, Malaysia now wants to import man-power for work on plantations, agriculture, mill factories, service and the construction sector, the minister further said.
