Ananya Azad urges PM to take action against militants

Update : 01 Nov 2015, 07:16 AM

Blogger Ananya Azad, whose name is on a “hit-list” of secular writers drawn up by Islamist extremists, has urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take action against the militants responsible for killings of the free thinkers, bloggers.

Ananya, son of late professor Humayun Azad, made the request through his Facebook post published early Sunday.

“Dear Sheikh Hasina, the Islamist extremists might have fixed your death. If any such untoward incident happens, then your son Sajib Wazed Joy will claim there is no militant in the country!,” said Ananya.

He went on that: “Earlier, murder by hacking used to take place under the dark of night. Then it started in presence of thousands of people and then in the morning. Finally such killing has appeared inside home and office! Have you imagined what will happen in the coming days ahead!

The atheist killing mission has been going on in the country for several decades. After the intellectuals and secular writers, publishers believe in the Liberation War spirit have met the same fate. In the future, the brave journalists will be attacked in the same way and the next victims are female writers and socials activists. All of them who contributed and have been contributing to the country are being murdered gradually.”

“Dear prime minister, how many years you will remain silent? Are you obsessed in power? Despite the such heinous attacks, will you still claim there is no militant in the country? You have made several mistakes and there is no need to repeat those. Similarity between you and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is that Bangabandhu considered the foes as friend and you are considering friends as foes,” Ananya also said.

Earlier, Ananya had informed of considering fleeing the country and said he spent much of his time indoors.

His father Humayun Azad survived a machete attack on February 27, 2004 after he wrote a critique of fundamentalism. Later, he died in Germany on October 8, the same year.

He is one of more than 80 people on a list of bloggers targeted for their criticism of religious intolerance and extremism in Bangladesh, which is officially secular but has seen mounting attacks on atheists.
