Mahmudur indicted in hartal arson case

A Dhaka court yesterday indicted the daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and eight others on charges of torching vehicles at Farmgate during shutdown on March 17, 2013.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Mashud Sheikh rejected the discharge petition and framed the charges against the accused under sections 143, 435,427 and 109 of the Penal Code.

The court fixed February 28 to begin trial in the case.

The others indicted are Anwaruzzaman alias Anwar, Lutfar Rahman, Abdur Rahim, Ripon Kumar Kundu, Shajahan Babu, Aminul Islam Jakir, Jahangir Khan and Mehedi Hasan.

The court also cancelled the bail of former ward commissioner and BNP leader Anwar and five others and issued arrest warrant against them.

According to the case, on March 17, 2013 some miscreants torched a public bus in front of Farmview Super Market at Farmgate. Bus driver Md Anowar Hossain Babu filed the case with Tejgaon police.

Sub-Inspector Md Rajibul Islam submitted the charge sheet with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on April 4 last year.
