Update : 28 Oct 2015, 06:52 PM

A cargo vessel carrying 510 tonnes of coal capsized in the Pasur River in Mongla upazila near the Sundarbans on Tuesday night.

Sub-Inspector Md Nazrul Islam, also in-charge of Chandpai Navy police camp, said the Khulna-bound ship named "MV GR Raj" from Mongla Port capsized in Beauty Market area of the river near the Sundarbans as the keel of the ship was fractured around 9pm.

Later, locals in a trawler rescued the 10 crews of the vessel from the river.

A three-member probe committee, headed by Assistant Forest Conservator (Chandpai Range) Md Belayet Hossain, has been formed in this connection, reports UNB.

Md Saidul Isalm, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Zone, said the sunken cargo might harm the ecosystem of the Sundarbans, world’s largest mangrove forest.
