Ingenious people living in three hill districts, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari, are going to celebrate traditional Mahaa Wagyawai Powe festival amid festivity from today.

People of hills especially from Buddhist community will celebrate Proborona Purnima, the second largest festival in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, locally known as Wagyawai Powe from October 27 to October 29 this year.

According to festival committee sources, ingenious people will send fanus (hot air ballon) in the sky on the day of Prabarana Purnima.

In the course of the three-day celebrations, the indigenous Buddhists  offered Pradeep (candle) Puja, organised traditional cultural programmes, performed rituals, a cake festival, take out chariots in the district town, and released colourful paper lanterns (Fanush) in the evening.

Jay Titu Borua, a trader in Bandarban Bazar, told the Dhaka Tribune that they had taken all prepations to celebrate the festival.

President of Wagyawai Powe festival committee Mung Ching Nu Marma said like previous years they would celebrate the festival with much fanfare.

The Probarona Purnima marks the conclusion of the three-month long seclusion of the monks inside their monasteries for self-edification and atonement of defilement.

District administration sources said they had taken steps to ensure security for tourists as numbers of visitors increased during the festival in the hill districts.
