Nine war crimes suspects sued in two districts

Update : 25 Oct 2015, 07:48 PM

A freedom fighter has sued Maulana Shafi Uddin, central leader of erstwhile East Pakistan Nezam-e-Islami, and three others for committing crimes against humanity in Habiganj during the 1971 Liberation War.

Taking the case into cognisance, Judge Md Kauser of the Seventh Habiganj Judicial Magistrate and Cognisance Court ordered authorities concerned to forward the case to the International Crimes Tribunal, reports our correspondent.

Maulana Shafi is the son of Matiur Rahman from Manpur village under Lakhai upazila. The other accused are Md Jahid Mia and Md Tajul Islam alias Pokon Razakar of Muriauk village, and Md Salek Mia alias Chhayek Mia of Jirunda village under the same upazila.

Plaintiff Ilias Kamal in the case said that Maulana Shafi and his accomplices had abducted his father Idris Mia and father of a co-fighter Abdul Jabbar from Manpur and Muriatek on October 30 and 31. They were later killed near Manpur’s Ujadur Beel and the bodies dumped in the water.

The case also said that the accused had been involved in committing genocide, rape, looting and arson attacks at Krishnapur, Ganganagar and nearby villages during the war.

When asked, Ilias said that he could not file case earlier out of fear. “I have filed the case now as the current government is holding the trials of war criminals,” he added.

During the war, Jamaat-e-Islami, Nezam-e-Islami and Convention Muslim League had formed different groups of collaborators to assist the Pakistan occupation forces in committing war crimes against the pro-liberation people.

Meanwhile, another case was filed yesterday against a former lawmaker from Trishal of Mymensingh and four others for their alleged involvement in war crimes, reports our correspondent.

Anisur Rahman Manik was a lawmaker from HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party. The other accused are Manik’s brother Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul alias Khaleque Razakar, Saidur Rahman Ratan, Shamsul Huq Fakir and Sultan Ahmed Fakir.

Hafiz Uddin from Baroi village under Trishal upazila filed the case with the Third Mymensingh Cognisance Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Mithaful Islam. The court did not pass any order on the matter.

The plaintiff identified himself as a pro-liberation activist.

The case says that local freedom fighter Abdul Hamid had been abducted from his house on September 10, 1971 and tortured at Ahmedbari razakar camp. The key accused, Manik, shot the freedom fighter dead around 8pm that day.

Earlier this month, the law enforcers arrested the incumbent lawmaker from Trishal, Abdul Hannan, for his alleged involvement in committing crimes against humanity in 1971. Hannan is a Presidium member of Ershad-led Jatiya Party.
