Update : 24 Oct 2015, 06:23 AM

US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat has expressed shock at the bomb attack on a Shia gathering in the capital's Hussaini Dalan.

In a Facebook statement on Saturday, the US envoy said: "I am shocked by the senseless attack on a Shia Ashura gathering outside Old Dhaka, and offer my deepest condolences to the victims and their families.”

Mentioning that Bangladesh has a long tradition of religious tolerance and communal harmony, she further said: “We stand with the Bangladeshi people and the Bangladesh government in these critical moments."

At least a person has been killed and nearly 60 others injured in homemade bomb attacks on a Shia gathering in the capital's Hussaini Dalan.

The first explosion occurred around 1:30am Saturday while the Shia community people were preparing for their traditional Taziah procession, a local television channel reported from the scene.

Later, two more bombs went off consecutively after five minutes.

However, the Shia community people have brought out their traditional Taziah procession from Imam Bara with due religious fervour despite the bomb attacks.

Apart from the main procession from the ImamBara, the Shias brought out several numbers of Taziahs from different part of the capital, marking the holy Ashura.

They are seen carrying duldul, banners and flags in remembrance the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), along with his family members and 72 followers.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam embraced martyrdom in the hands of soldiers of Yazid at Karbala desert for the supremacy of justice and righteousness.
