Seven BCL men held for vandalising idols

Seven activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student front of the ruling Awami League, have been arrested on charges of damaging idols in the district's Wazirpur upazila.

The arrestees are Mehedi Hasan, Shamim Mridha, Badiul Islam, Masud Sheikh, Miraj Hoaoladar, Miraj Fakir, Sukdev Sarkar. All of the arrestees are the members of Syedkathi union parishad BCL unit.

Uttam Biswas, president of Purba Harta Chairman Bari Sarbojanin Puja Udjapon Committee, said some youths were roaming around Puja Mandap on Monday afternoon. Later, they engaged in an altercation with the volunteers of Puja mandop over collecting donation for the development of the mandop.

At one stage of argument, a group of BCL members led by Mehedi came to the spot and attacked volunteers on Monday night, leaving four people injured. They also damaged the idols.

Following the attack, agitated locals caught seven of the attackers along with three motorcycles and handed over them to the police, Uttam added.

Uttam Biswas lodged a case with Wazirpur police station in this connection the same night.

The arrested seven were sent to jail on Tuesday, Wazirpur SI Nizamuddin said.
