Khoka jailed for 13 years

A Dhaka court has handed down a 13-year jail sentence to former Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka in a case filed for amassing Tk9.96 crore beyond known source of income.

Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of Dhaka Special Judge's Court 3 delivered the verdict in the absence of Khoka on Tuesday morning.

Under one section of the case, the court handed down three-year imprisonment to the BNP leader and fined him Tk1 lakh. In default, he will have to serve another one month in jail.

Meanwhile, in another section the court sentenced Khoka to 10-year jail and fined him Tk10 lakh. In default, he will have to serve another six months in jail.

The BNP vice-chairman is now staying in the USA.

On October 30, 2014, a Dhaka court indicted the former DCC mayor in the case.

Mohammad Shamsul Alam, assistant commissioner of the Anti Corruption Commission, filed the case against Khoka, his wife, son and daughter on December 6, 2007.

He submitted charge sheet against Khoka and his wife Ismat Ara on April 2, 2008.

Later, the High Court issued a stay order on the trial proceeding against Khoka's wife in the case.
