BB Governor hands over cheques to poor families in Tungipara

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman convened people to stand united in order to eradicate poverty from the country.

He termed poverty a “ghost” while handing over cheques to underprivileged families in Tungipara, Gopalganj Saturday.

The governor handed over Tk25,000 to each family totaling to Tk53 lakh from the Bangladesh Bank disaster management and corporate social responsibility fund.

BB has issued a circular directing all government and non-government entities to use jute products, particularly, sacks to support the jute farmers.

“Farmers help to earn dollar. Their children work in the Middle East and send us remittance. Why won't we stand by the farmers?” he said.

Gopalganj District Administrator Md Khalilur Rahman chaired the session while Bangladesh Bank Executive Director M Mahfuzur Rahman and Janata Bank Managing Director Abdus Salam were present as special guests.

A total of 212 extreme poor families in Tungipara city received the cheques.

Atiur Rahman placed floral wreath on the grave of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and prayed for the departed soul.
