Rajon’s father: Punish cops who let Kamrul escape

Update : 16 Oct 2015, 07:01 PM

The father of the slain teen Rajon has demanded that maximum punishment be served to the police officials who had assisted one of the key murder suspects – Kamrul Islam – to flee the country.

The comment from the father, Sheikh Azizur Rahman, came as Kamrul was sent to jail yesterday by a Sylhet court following his extradition from Saudi Arabia.

Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate 2 Anwarul Haque sent Kamrul to jail after police produced him before his court yesterday.

Aziz expressed his gratitude to the prime minister and the home minister for successfully bringing back Kamrul, who had escaped to Saudi Arabia allegedly with the help of some unscrupulous law enforcers.

On July 8, 13-year-old Samiul Alam Rajon was beaten to death in Sylhet’s Kumargaon by some men who falsely accused him of stealing a rickshaw van.

One of the killers recorded the incident on mobile phone and later uploaded it to Facebook, triggering a massive public outrage.

Rajon’s father Aziz told the Dhaka Tribune that relatives of Kamrul were still trying to intimidate him into withdrawing the murder case. Aziz said the level of threat has reached a stage where his family was being forced to escort Rajon’s younger brother Sajon to school every day with the help of a few others.

Replying to a query, the father said they would not leave the country until justice was served to his son’s killers; but if the threat to their lives became too great, the family might eventually consider seeking asylum to another country in the future, he added.

Aziz said he met with US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat on Thursday, who assured him of providing any necessary support.

Also on Thursday, Kamrul was brought back to the country by a Bangladesh Police team with the help of Saudi authorities. Kamrul, an expatriate, was captured by local Bangladeshis in Jeddah soon after the news spread about the teen’s death.

On September 22, a Sylhet court indicted 13 people for the murder of Rajon. Witness deposition in the case began on October 1 and is scheduled to end tomorrow.

Eleven suspects including Kamrul are now in police custody while eight of them have given confessional statements in the case. Interpol has issued Red Notice against two other fugitive suspects – Kamrul’s brothers Shamim and Pavel.
