The Supreme Court yesterday cleared the way for realising 7.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) from the tuition fees of English medium school students.
A vacation bench of the Appellate Division of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed for eight weeks a High Court order that had stayed 7.5 percent VAT slapped on the tuition fees of the English medium schools.
With the order, there is no legal bar to taking VAT on the tuition fees of the English medium schools, said deputy attorney general SM Maniruzzaman.
On September 17, the High Court stayed for six months the 7.5 percent VAT slapped on the tuition fees.
The HC order came three days after the withdrawal of VAT on the private university students in the face of strong student movement.
