Call to develop strategy to implement SDGs

Update : 14 Oct 2015, 06:52 PM

The government needs to formulate a sustainable development strategy through the participation of all to effectively implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), experts suggested at a programme yesterday.

They said opinions should be taken from poverty-stricken society and marginalised people to implement “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)” adopted through United Nations 70th General Assembly held in September.

This strategy should be meaningful, and have measurable commitments on the progressive realisation of all SDGs, they said at a Meet the Press held at the National Press Club yesterday.

Development research organisation, VOICE, national watch group, NOW SDGs and global civil society platform, Beyond 2015, jointly organised the programme.

Reading out the keynote paper, VOICE Executive Director Ahmed Swapan Mahmud said political will, introduction of clear plans and timeliness are required to start implementation of the 2030 Agenda at national, sub-national and local levels.

Mahmud also urged the government to form a national coordination committee and establish inclusive national baselines, national data collection and management systems for the implementation of SDGs.

He also stressed alignment of Post-2015 agenda with 7th Five-Year Plan in Bangladesh.

For fruitful implementation of Post Agenda 2015, CPRD Executive Director Shamsuddoha said the government must commit to create opportunities for dialogue between people from all classes, particularly from marginalised and excluded groups.
