The cabinet has approved in principal the drafts of law that will pave the way for registered political parties to nominate candidates in the local body elections.
The decision came from Monday's cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at the Bangladesh Secretariat, said Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.
Following the passage of the bill, the local body elections will be held like the national elections, said the cabinet secretary. “Political parties will nominate their candidates and the nominated candidates will contest the polls under their respective party symbols.”
However, independent candidates can also participate in the polls and they will get different symbols, said Musharraf. "The laws for holding polls to the Zilla Parishad, Upazila Parishad, Union Parishad and City Corporations will be placed before the Parliament for necessary passage after the passage of the Act."
