4 of a family among 5 burnt in gas burner explosion

Five people, including four members of a family, have received severe burns in a fire explosion caused by accumulated gas in their residence in the capital's Dakshin Khan area.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost ASI Sentu Chandra Das confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the incident.

The injured are identified as Rehana Akhter, 40, wife of Saudi Arabia expatriate Abul Kashem, her daughter Afsana Akhter, 20, two sons-- Rezanul Ahmed Shovo, 18, and Tanvir Ahmed Niloy, 12,and housemaid Sakina, 12.

Talking to reporters at the DMCH, burn injured Shovo said the incident took place when their domestic help Sakina was trying to light the gas burner around 7:30am. "We all received severe burns as all of a sudden an explosion occurred due to leak in the stove."

Contacted, Mizanur Rahman, duty officer of Fire Service control room, said fire erupted in the kitchen of the house due to gas leakage. A unit of Tongi Fire Station went to the spot and doused the flame, he added.

Condition of Rehana, Niloy and Sakina is stated to be critical.
