Five people, including four members of a family, were killed while four others were injured as a bus and a CNG-run autorickshaw collided head-on in Patiya upazila, Chittagong yesterday afternoon.
Police said the family – Kanchan Sen, 28, his wife Anamika Sen, 24, their son Kakon Sen, 3, Kanchan’s elder brother Anjan Sen, 32, Anjan’s wife Rupna Sen, 25, their two sons Apon Sen, 7, and Anik Sen, 5, and Kanchan’s cousin Milton Sen, 24 – were going to Banshkhali on the autorickshaw from their village Kelishahar in Patiya when the accident took place.
A passenger bus rammed into the autorickshaw when it reached Manansa Chowmuhani area around 12:30pm.
Milton and Kakon died on the spot in the accident, while seven others were critically injured. The injured were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where Rupna, Anik and autorickshaw driver Saiful Islam, 25, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment, said Shafiqul Azam, in-charge of Paitya Highway police outpost and Sub-Inspector Zahirul Islam, in-charge of CMCH police outpost.
Critically injured Kanchan, Anamika, Anjan and Apon are under treatment at the CMCH, they added.
When contacted, Shafiqul Azam said the passenger bus was going to Cox’s Bazar.
Kefayat Ullah, officer-in-charge of Patiya police station, said police seized the bus but the bus driver managed to flee.
No case had been filed yet in this connection when this report was filed.
