Licences of MP Liton's arms revoked

The authorities have cancelled the licences of two private arms possessed by Manjurul Islam Liton, the ruling party lawmaker from Gaibandha's Sundarganj, who shot at a schoolboy on Friday allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad on Sunday said that the licences were scrapped as the MP had used his legal arms in illegal activities.

Also president of Sundarganj unit Awami League, MP Liton has been on the run since the incident. But the local police said that he was staying in Dhaka.

Saju Mia, father of eight-year-old Shahadat Hossain Sourov, filed an attempted murder case with Sundarganj police on Saturday.

On Saturday night, the lawmaker's brother-in-law Tarikul Islam surrendered a revolver, a shotgun, and bullets to the police, upon directives of the district police authorities.

Superintendent of Police Md Ashraful Alam said that MP Liton had been using the arms in different illegal and unethical acts since long.

“He created panic among the people by brandishing the arms and opening fire at people on several occasions in the past. We received several complaints on the matter. Moreover, he injured a boy named Sourov on Friday. The process of withdrawing licence of the arms began following the latest incident,” he told reporters on Saturday.

Meanwhile, several organisations formed human chain in Gaibandha town and Sundarganj yesterday demanding arrest of the lawmaker.

A faction of Sundarganj upazila unit Awami League and the Citizens' Movement Council organised a human chain at Bangabandhu Chattar of the upazila in the afternoon.

Locals alleged that they had been asked by the authorities and the MP's men not to demonstrate.

Moreover, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Bangladesh Jubo Union activists formed a human chain at the DB Road intersection in Gaibandha town in the afternoon.
