'Planned untoward incidents to put country's dignity at stake'

Hinting at the recent murders of two foreigners in the capital and Rangpur, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has blamed a vested quarter for the offences to brand the country negatively to the world.

The prime minister made the remarks at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Satuday afternoon.

“While the country is on the track of gaining importance from the other nations, a vested interest has been committing some unpleasant incidents across the country to blur its dignity. The countrymen and the party activists should be alert to the conspirators,” the prime minister was quoted by former Sylhet city corporation mayor and AL leader Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran.

Sylhet city unit Awami League leader Kamran made the statement to journalists following a meeting with the PM in VIP lounge of Osmani Airport on Saturday.

Kamran continued that the PM and also the ruling AL president advised them to publicise the ongoing development activities of the government.

She dedicated her recent awards - Champions of the Earth and ICT Sustainable Development – to the country people, the PM was quoted as saying by the local leader.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has returned home this morning after wrapping up an eight-day official visit to the USA to attend the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the prime minister and her entourage landed on Osmani International Airport at 11:40am and she made a one-hour stopover there before reaching Dhaka.

Local AL leaders and activists welcomed the PM there, who left the country for the UNGA assembly on September 24.

A Japanese national namely Oci Koniyo has been gunned down by unknown miscreants in Alutari area under Kawnia upazila of Rangpur today.

The incident took place just five days into Italian citizen Cesare Tavella's murder in the capital's Gulshan area.
