US also alerts its citizens in Dhaka

The US government has issued an alert for its citizens living in Bangladesh citing getting information that terrorist groups in South Asia may be planning attacks in the region against US interests.

It asked its citizens to limit their attendance at events where foreigners may gather.

In a message on its website it advised US citizens in Dhaka to maintain a high level of vigilance in public places including restaurants, hotels and other places frequented by foreigners.

Until further notice, all official US officials are prohibited from attending large gatherings in Bangladesh.

Earlier on Monday, the UK government asked its citizens living in Bangladesh to remain vigilant in the wake of threat from terrorists.

An Italian citizen, Cesare Tavella, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the capital’s Gulshan diplomatic zone on Monday evening.

Tavella, 50, was a project manager at the Netherlands-based development organisation ICCO Cooperation.

Extremist militant group Islamic State (IS) has claimed the responsibility for killing the Italian national, according to Site Intelligence Group, a website that tracks online activity of Jihadi organisations.

On Saturday, the Australian cricket team delayed its planned departure to Bangladesh after being warned by its government that there was a potential security risk from militants.

The touring side were due to fly from Sydney on Monday morning for the three-week tour which includes two test matches.
