2 Bangladeshi judges become PCA members

Update : 20 Sep 2015, 01:57 PM

Two former Bangladeshi judges have become members of Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands.

This is the first time judges - Justice Md Tofazzal Hossain and Justice Md Awlad Ali - from Bangladesh have become members of this esteemed international organization, reports BSS.

Justice Hossain is the former chief justice and Justice Ali is a former judge of the High Court Division.

"This appointment is the reflection of Bangladesh's continuous efforts to establish world peace through close involvement with legal organisations based in The Hague," an official release said on Sunday.

Justice Hossain was the main architect behind cancellation of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution and upholding the High Court order sentencing the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Justice Ali conducted many commercial arbitration cases with much success during his professional life.

The PCA is an intergovernmental organisation with 117 member states.

Established in 1899, the PCA provides services for the resolution of disputes involving various combinations of states, state entities, intergovernmental organisations, and private parties.

The PCA also settled the maritime boundary dispute between Bangladesh and India.
