Ctg jute mill workers block road, rail track for arrear salary

The workers of Amin Jute Mill have blocked Chittagong-Hathazari road and city to university rail track for three hours demanding to their outstanding salaries.

However, the blockade was withdrawn at noon when the protesting workers got the assurance from the mill authorities of getting arrears after a meeting but the commuters of the concerning route suffered a lot due to the blockade, police and local sources said.

The Industrial Police, Chittagong’s Inspector (Intelligence) Arifur Rahman Arif said the mill authorities promised to pay the workers of paying one week’s salary in next Sunday and other outstanding salary as soon as possible.

“Getting the assurance the workers, who started the demonstration at 10am, went back to mill at around 1pm,” he said.

Amin Jute Mill’s General Manager Josna Afroz said the mill’s activities resumed at around 2pm as the workers joined in their respective duties.

Earlier, about a thousand workers of the mill out of 1,500 workers at around 10am and blocked Chittagong-Hathazari road’s Bayezid and the Chittagong-Nazirhat railway line at mill area demanding their last 10 weeks’ outstanding salaries.

Industrial Police said the workers started demonstration inside the mill from the morning while they positioned on the road and rail line at one stage of their movement.
