Update : 10 Sep 2015, 07:49 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told parliament last night that the authorities of private universities have already agreed to pay the 7.5% VAT imposed on tuition fees.

Echoing the National Board of Revenue’s statement, she said: “The students will not pay any VAT; it is the university authorities who will have to pay the VAT and they have agreed on it.”

The premier said: “We gave permission to establish private universities. But we came to know that three universities were housed in a single building in Dhanmondi or Gulshan area. What is the quality of education in those universities? Is there no accountability?”

Regarding the government’s plan on education, she said: “We have decided to set up government or private university in every district.”

Comparing expenses of higher education in the country with that of other countries, she said it was not possible to pursue higher studies at such low expenses in other parts of the world.

Opposition Leader Raushan Ershad in her speech at the parliament called for the prime minister’s intervention in private university students’ demonstration against the 7.5% VAT.

When someone sitting beside her said the movement had been withdrawn, Raushan said: “If it has been withdrawn, then it is a good move.”
