Science and Technology Minister Yafes Osman Monday told the parliament that Bangladesh Centre for Science and Industrial Research (BCSIR) has thus far set up 24,650 biogas plants across the country.
Replying to a query, the minister also said the government plans to set up more biogas plants nationwide.
BCSIR, with the backing of Bangladesh Climate Change Trust fund, is now establishing 5,000 such plants in 15 districts.
The use of renewable energy has risen considerably in recent times, both in developed and in developing countries.
BCSIR pioneered the concept of biogas in the early 1980s and set up the bulk of the plants across Bangladesh. But many of the plants could not be sustained due to a lack of proper supervision and maintenance.
