SC stays HC ban on Rana Plaza film

Update : 06 Sep 2015, 06:52 PM

The Supreme Court has stayed a High Court order that banned the release and screening of “Rana Plaza” for six months.

The four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order yesterday after hearing a petition filed by the film’s producer Shamima Aktar.

“Now there is no bar on the film’s screening at the cinema halls,” said Shamima’s counsel AM Amin Uddin.

The film is based on RMG worker Reshma Begum who was buried alive under the rubble of Rana Plaza for 17 days before rescue workers found her.

The High Court issued the ban on August 24 following a contempt of court petition filed by Bangladesh National Garment Workers Employees League chief Sirajul Islam on August 20.

In his petition, Siraj said “Rana Plaza” was too graphic and would make a negative impact on people both home and abroad.
