Egg prices continue to spiral up

Update : 05 Sep 2015, 07:48 PM

Egg prices continue to spiral up and have now crossed Tk120 per dozen in retail market as, market insiders say, the rain for last two days exacerbated the situation further disrupting the supply chain.

Earlier in 2012 the egg price rose to Tk120 a dozen in the retail market.

Electricity price hike and rains have been blamed for the soaring prices of the protein-rich food as these factors caused production fall as well as supply chain disruption.

The price has increased by Tk30 per dozen in last 15 days only as the food is now being sold at more than Tk120 per dozen.

According to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the price increased by Tk11 for every four eggs in just a month and now stands at Tk36-38.

“Poultry farms across the country have been flooded due to heavy rainfall, causing the egg price go up,” Tahir Ahmed, president of Bangladesh Egg Producers’ Association (BEPA), told Dhaka Tribune.

BEPA data shows that the country’s poultry farms produced a total of 50m eggs against a demand of 60m.

“The price hike of eggs due to rain is temporary. We have already started monitoring over the situation in retail market,” Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, senior commerce secretary, said.
