An architecture student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet has been found dead in his room.
Deceased Shahriar Majumder was a student of 2008-2009 session and a Gonojagoron Moncho activist hailing from Chittagong.
Classmates and police said Shahriar lived in a mess adjacent to the university in Surma residential area.
Police said his door was found locked from the inside when his classmates went to call him around 8pm. When Shahriar did not respond, they tried to peep through the ventilator and found that his body was hanging from a belt, police added.
Later, they broke the door to get inside and informed the police.
Kotwali police recovered his body and sent it to Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police are primarily suspecting that Shahriar committed suicide.
However, Shahriar's friends and acquaintances claimed he could not commit suicide.
Terming the death as mysterious, they demanded proper investigation of it.
One of Shahriar's friends said he was seen in jolly mood during Wednesday's protest programme at the university campus.
Residents of Shahriar's mess said his laptop was switched on when he was found hanging.
Many of his acquaintances expressed suspicion over Shahriar's death on Facebook. They said committing suicide from a height which is less than Shahriar's height is unbelievable.
Some of Shahriar's Facebook friends claimed that the Gonojagoron Moncho activist received death treats several times since 2013.
When asked about the incident, the SUST Proctor Professor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury said the CID and police investigation teams have already been called to the scene to investigate the death.
